SASF Student Kedene McLeod Takes 3rd Place in Knicks Poetry Slam Finals

The competition featured hundreds of NYC's best young spoken word artists, and concluded with 13 finalists performing in a packed Broadway theater before a panel of judges...

What a performance!  What a result!

After many rounds of competition featuring hundreds of the city’s best young spoken word artists, the 2009-10 Knicks Poetry Slam concluded last night with 13 finalists all competing for top honors on Feb. 18.  Kedene McLeod, a participant in SASF's Champions Club after-school program at Secondary School for Research in Brooklyn, brought home 3rd place at the Knicks Poetry Slam Finals!  Considering the outstanding talent, passion and skill on display from all of the finalists, Kedene’s top-three finish was a remarkable achievement; one that she, her family and the entire Secondary School Champions Club team should be very proud of!

Kedene likes to say that the art of spoken word has saved her life.  After hearing her courageous, heart-pounding performance, the evening’s host commented to the packed house at the New Amsterdam Theatre that “she was probably saving others’ lives with her words.”  Quite a compliment.  With her 3rd place finish, Kedene won a $5,000 college scholarship, a brand new laptop computer and $10,000 in Nike sports equipment for her school.

Kedene’s accomplishment was made possible through SASF’s dynamic partnership with the New York Knicks, and it represents yet another example of how SASF is “closing the opportunity gap” for so many NYC youth by providing experiences that enable them to develop new skills, gain self confidence and reach their full potential.
