Supplemental Educational Services (SES)
|
Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation’s (SASF) Supplemental Education Services (SES) tutoring provides for free small group tutorial sessions that focus on literacy, mathematics and language arts, and are specifically offered to schools identified by New York State as “Schools in Need of Improvement (SINI).” SES is also part of the No Child Left Behind Act, which gives parents the right to choose tutorial services best suited to their children’s academic needs. SASF is certified by the New York State Education Department to provide free SES services. SASF's SES programs use state-certified teaches, specialized learning materials, and often allows for student participation in high-quality Champions Club sports and arts after-school programs that blend seamlessly with academic assistance sessions after the school day. This combination of sports, arts and tutoring is preferred by many school principals and parents because it excites and motivates children to attend on a regular basis. The unique integration of the SES program with Champions Clubs distinguishes SASF from the dozens of other SES providers in New York City. The program has experienced significant growth since its inception, serving more than 6,000 students (grades 1-12) at 45 schools in the 2008/09 school year. SASF's SES success can be attributed to recruiting dedicated school teachers; utilizing top-quality instructional materials; offering up to 75 hours of tutoring per student; and achieving high attendance rates. Preliminary outcomes from the Metis Report show that SASF’s SES program may have contributed to improving performance levels in Reading by almost 33% and in Math by over 27% – a stunning testament to the effectiveness of the program. |
