C.H.A.M.P.S. Middle School Sports and Fitness Leagues
|
The C.H.A.M.P.S Middle School Sports and Fitness program exists as a unique partnership between the Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation (SASF) and the New York City Department of Education (DOE). The C.H.A.M.P.S. (Cooperative, Healthy, Active, Motivated and Positive Students) program provides before- and after-school sports and fitness training, instructional residencies, equipment, skills showcases, tournaments and special events in three 12-week seasons throughout the school year. The program currently serves about 40,000 New York City middle school students annually; it is the largest of its kind in the nation. C.H.A.M.P.S. brings the fun and fitness of full-participation sports instruction, intramurals and competitive sports leagues to middle school students who develop values such as teamwork, discipline, athletic skills and healthy lifestyles. SASF’s contribution to the C.H.A.M.P.S. partnership includes professional training of teacher-coaches (through SASF’s Center for Sports Instruction), recruitment and hiring of specialists/mentors to assist teachers, equipment purchases, uniforms and the organization of culminating events and skills showcases for students. In addition, C.H.A.M.P.S. provides youth with an introduction to non-traditional activities – from fencing to tai chi to crew – that they would otherwise never be exposed to. It is this variety of programming not typically available to public school students that makes C.H.A.M.P.S. unique and invaluable.
