High School Transition
With the hurdle of high school graduation looming so large before so many of New York City’s youth, Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation (SASF) has created the innovative High School Today, College Tomorrow after-school model to make sure middle school students are ready for success in high school.  The model focuses on a transition or “bridge” program that helps prepare 6th, 7th and 8th graders for the increased academic and social demands of high school, helps families navigate the Department of Education’s high school selection process, and most importantly, helps students gain admission to the best New York City high schools (which will prepare them for success in college).

The program focuses on two key transitions: middle school to high school and high school to college.  It offers a grade-appropriate core curriculum that includes:
  • SASF-created How To Improve Your Study Skills curriculum;
  • Writing exercises through project-based learning;
  • Visits to colleges and universities in the city, region and along the Eastern seaboard; and
  • School-year internships and summer jobs.
Also, SASF’s High School Today, College Tomorrow program also provides an intensive test prep and academic counseling component for highly-motivated students in low-income neighborhoods.  SASF assists students seeking admission to the top nine elite specialized high schools in New York City (including Stuyvesant, Bronx Science and Brooklyn Tech) and the most competitive “screened” high schools.
