Summer Programs
INFORMATION ON SASF'S FREE 2010 SUMMER PROGRAMS:

Dear Parent/Guardian:

We have completed our 2010 summer programs.  By all standards we had a hugely successful summer.  According to survey results from children, parents and school administrators from all five boroughs, all parties were extremely pleased with their SASF summer experiences.

We wish to thank the follwing institutions for their generous support for our summer programs: the New York City Council; the New York State Education Department; and the New York City Dept. of Youth and Community Development.

SASF ran four types of programs this summer:
  1. Sports ClinicsAre you interested in having your child receive expert instruction in a particular sport or activity?  SASF’s free Summer Sports Clinics feature some of the best coaches and/or athletes in the tri-state area with experience at the collegiate and professional levels.  Our Summer Dance Clinics feature instructors who have trained some of the world’s most renowned performers.  Clinics last one or two weeks and focus on the development of fundamental skills and core competencies in a particular sport or activity.  Areas of instruction include Basketball, Volleyball, Flag Rugby, Tennis, Table Tennis, Dance, Flag Football, Baseball and more.  These free programs are open to any child living in New York City. Please see below for age restrictions.
  2. City Council Sports and Arts Summer Program:  Fun, dynamic, memorable, skills based sports activities, creative art projects, specialized sports instruction, field trips and more!  These programs are open to any child in New York City between the ages of 6 and 12.
  3. 21st Century Sports and Arts Academic Summer Program:  Is your child transitioning from Elementary to middle school or middle school to high school?  These camps combine fun sports and arts activities with academic enrichment projects, good study habits and career guidance programming.  While space in these camps is limited, we encourage you to enroll your child anyway and be placed on a waiting list!  SASF seeks to provide any child who wants to experience our Academic Camp with an opportunity to do so.OST
  4. Full-Day and Three Quarter-Day Programs:  Working all day and have no alternatives?  These camps provide exciting sports, arts and field trips in a full-day environment.  These camps are open first to students currently enrolled in an SASF program, followed by those from the community at large.  For those parents who don’t have children enrolled in an SASF program, please enroll early in these camps - space is limited!
Note to Parents:
Our programs and camps are free and provide high-quality, engaging and dynamic instruction for your child.  We follow New York City and New York State Department of Health Guidelines.  Our camp directors and employees undergo strict safety training, ensuring each program is a safe and enjoyable place for your child.

More on SASF's Summer Programs:

Sports & Arts in Schools Foundation (SASF) Summer Programs fill a critical need for school-aged children during the months of July and August.  Research shows that youngsters – especially those from low income families – lose ground academically during the summer months.  Additionally, many city children spend summers without physical activity or creative stimulation, filling idle hours sitting in front of the television or computer.  SASF’s Summer Programs are specifically designed to fill the summer learning/fitness gap among our city’s youth, all free of charge to participating families.

SASF’s Summer Programs rely on a strong base of support from the New York City Council.  In addition, SASF has secured funds from other sources to expand its summer programming.  Various SASF Summer Program models include:
  • Sports and Arts Programs: providing three-hour “wrap-around” extensions to the summer school day with sports, arts and exciting field trips;
  • Academic Programs: providing six hours of daily academic enrichment and career counseling in addition to sports and arts;
  • Out-Of-School-Time (OST) Programs: providing full-day sessions with sports, arts and academics, funded by the Department of Youth and Community Development; and
  • McKinney Programs: providing the SASF Summer Program experience to youth living in temporary/public shelter housing.
