College Readiness
Linking education with successful career experience is an effective strategy to help students complete high school and go on to college or jobs with futures. At Flushing High School in Queens, SASF’s Workforce Investment Act (WIA) after-school model has blended an employment preparedness curriculum and real-world job placement with SASF’s outstanding selection of sports and arts activities to give participants the tools and incentives they need to change the direction of their lives.

Funded by the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development, SASF’s WIA after-school model ties academic performance with guaranteed summer employment. As participants begin to associate success in the classroom with employment and income, foundations are set for lifelong achievement. SASF’s WIA program features the following elements:
  • Academic Enhancement: Homework help, regents tutoring, computer literacy, project-based learning, SAT and PSAT test preparation;
  • College Awareness: College admissions workshops for students and parents; campus visits; college application and financial aid assistance;
  • Summer Jobs: Paid summer jobs at professional locations like the offices of the Queens District Attorney, Assemblyman Jose Peralta and the Queens Hall of Science;
  • Life Skills: Conflict resolution training, character education, peer mentorship;
  • Community Service: Community service activities have included volunteer work at the Flushing Manor Nursing Center and the Saint Mary’s Children’s Hospital;
  • Career Counseling: Outstanding career guidance program conducted by two full-time guidance fellows;
